A wonder catch by Josh at mid-wicket was the pick of many highlights as Hemingford U9s did us proud at a fantastic 8 team tournament hosted by Waresley. Josh and Ed won the “bowl off” for Hemingford against two other runner up teams, and Rupert was awarded a “player of the tournament” trophy at the end.
A close 5 run loss to Waresley Girls first match could have gone either way. Izzy clasped onto a caught and bowled, and Isaac took another wicket and we bowled with some great consistency. A solid batting partnership of 14 between Rupert and Jonah wasn’t quite enough to get Hemingford over the line.
The next match was even more exciting, Jonah managed to hit the last ball of the game for 4 to clinch victory against Houghton and Wyton by just one run! Some sharp fielding from Sam M and Callum coupled with great bowling from Will, Rupert, Jonah and Izzy had kept the Houghton batsmen at bay. Rupert and Will put on a great opening partnership, setting up the win for Jonah and Isaac to clinch it at the death.
The final match provided even more excitement, again going down to the wire on the last ball. Sadly for Hemingford, a wicket taken by an excellent Cambourne bowler notched back our score just under the opposition’s total, but it was a hugely entertaining encounter for the slightly over excited coaches and parents looking on. In the field Ed took a stunning catch at point, but a couple of overs later, Josh went one better, taking an audacious full stretch diving catch that no one watching could quite believe he held on to! Needing a big total against a strong Cambourne bowling attack, Olly and Harry put on a big final partnership, but a runner up position was still good enough to put us through to the bowl off, which Ed and Josh went on to win.
A wonderful days cricket and a brilliant performance from all the players who have improved dramatically throughout the summer. Well done all, on another day we could have won the entire tournament.
